Does God send natural disasters as a punishment on unrepentant sin?

Natural (and manmade) disasters seem to be occurring more and more often around the world. When they happen, it seems some claim these are from God and people need to repent from sin. The go even further by predicting more suffering and pain for those who refuse to repent from certain sin, usually sexual sins.
